CFexpress Type A card hire

CFexpress Type A is the smallest of the CFexpress card formats — about the size of an SD card but far faster. It uses a single PCIe lane, giving real-world speeds up to around 1,000MB/s, which is what cameras like the Sony FX3 need for their highest-quality recording modes.

Type A cards are not interchangeable with CFexpress Type B — the slots are physically different, so your camera takes one specific type.

Type A slots are found almost exclusively in Sony cameras, including:

• Sony FX3 and FX30 — cinema line cameras that need Type A for 4K 120p and All-Intra recording
• Sony A7S III, A7 IV and A1 — hybrid slots that accept both Type A and SD cards
• Sony FX6 — dual slots for Type A or SD

If you're not sure which card your camera takes, tell us the model and we'll confirm before you book.

It depends on your codec and how long you roll. As a rough guide, 4K XAVC S-I on the FX3 records at up to 600Mbps — that's roughly 4.5GB per minute, so a 256GB card holds around an hour at the highest quality. For full-day shoots or multicam setups, 512GB and 1TB cards keep card swaps to a minimum.

We stock Type A cards from 256GB up to 1TB, and you can hire one card or a full set for every camera on the job.

Tell us your camera, shoot dates and how much media you need. We'll confirm the right cards, send a quote, and ship them to you — next day delivery is available across the UK. Also shooting Type B? See our CFexpress Type B hire page, or read the full CFexpress guide.
